It has been more than 20 years of presence for the Volkswagen Group in India. With the launch of the automobile brand SKODA in 2001, it has marked its presence in India. Followed by SKODA, both AUDI and Volkswagen were introduced in India by 2007.

It was great for Indian buyers to have premium international sports brands like PORCHE and LAMBORGHINI back in 2012. Each brand is distinct and is an independent entity in the marketplace. 

But talking about the car brands under Volkswagen group, there are currently 13 brands:

  • SEAT
  • SKODA
  • Bentley
  • Bugatti
  • MAN
  • SCANIA
  • LAMBORGHINI

We all know Volkswagen cars for their German engineering and extreme comfort of the ride. It’s recent list of major vehicles like:

Polo, Polo GT, Vento, Jetta, Passat, Taigun, Tiguan, T-Roc, Beetle, and so on so worth.

The Volkswagen Group has its Indian facility is in Pune, Chakan. It covers an area of more than 2.3 million square meters (572 acres). It comprises structures totalling around 1,15,000 square meters. 

In a complete three-shift arrangement, the factory can produce up to 200,000 automobiles per year.

Recently Volkswagen has announced the worldwide discontinuation of the legacy of the Beetle car.

AUDI

“Audi has been a part of the Volkswagen Group since 1965. It is one of the world’s top premium brands.”

Volkswagen Automobile Group Audi was purchased by the Volkswagen Automotive Group in 1965. (according to the Audi page on the Volkswagen Automotive Group website).

Audi has long been known for producing high-performance automobiles.

SEAT

SEAT, S.A. being a member of the Volkswagen Group, has two distinct brands, CUPRA and SEAT.

Its headquarters are in Barcelona, Spain. It sells about 80% of its automobiles to 75 countries via a network of nearly 1,500 dealerships.

During the pandemic and the fiscal year 2020:

  • SEAT sold 484 thousand automobiles,
  • a 27.5% decrease from the previous year.
  • This statistic also includes the Audi A1.

SKODA AUTO VOLKSWAGEN INDIA PRIVATE LIMITED

It represents the passenger car subsidiaries of the Volkswagen Group in India.

Having the Indian Headquarters in Pune. SKODA AUTO India Private Limited (SAIPL), and Volkswagen India Private Limited (VWIPL), came into existence after their merger.

The journey of SKODA AUTO VOLKSWAGEN INDIA PRIVATE LIMITED (SAIPL) began back in 2001.

BENTLEY

Exclusivity, elegance, and power are hallmarks of the brand Bentley.

Volkswagen owns Bentley, while Audi has been in charge of it since March 1, 2021.

A new record high:

Despite the pandemic, Bentley brand deliveries in 2020 increased marginally to 11,206 (11,006) cars. Bentley sold 11,296 automobiles globally in the fiscal year 2020. During 2020, the Bentley brand manufactured 10,693 automobiles. It was 14.0 percent fewer than the previous year.

CUPRA

SEAT, a member of the Volkswagen Group, is a firm known for two distinct brands: SEAT and CUPRA.

CUPRA is an innovative and emotionally charged brand recognized for its electric cars’ revolutionary design and performance. In the year 2020, many new cars will be introduced.

Covid-19 Epidemic

  • SEAT’s customer deliveries plummeted by 25.6 % in the fiscal year 2020, to 427 thousand cars.
  • Almost all markets had year-on-year sales declines.
  • The CUPRA brand increased by 11.1% to 27 thousand cars,
  • Making CUPRA one of Europe’s fewest growing brands.

BUGATTI

Bugatti Automobiles

Is a premium brand for hyper sports vehicles and a French producer of high-performance luxury automobiles. 

The firm, situated in Molsheim, Alsace, was formed in 1998 as a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group. 

Buggati was launched by Ettore Bugatti in 1909. With delays due to World War II, he continued further to build sports, racing and luxury cars until 1963.

Stephan Winkelmann has served as President of the firm since January 1, 2018. Bugatti-Rimac will absorb the firm in late 2021.

Bugatti is a brand under Volkswagen Group’s umbrella. Bugatti is set to be part of a joint venture between Volkswagen’s Porsche division and Rimac, a young Croatian firm.

Rimac will control 55% of the Bugatti-Rimac joint venture, while Volkswagen’s Porsche will possess the remaining 45%.

Bugatti, whose Chiron model starts about $3 million, will join a joint venture between Volkswagen’s Porsche division and Rimac. This young Croatian firm has

built a name for itself,

executing design and

delivered many technical projects for giant carmakers.

MAN GROUP

MAN Truck and Bus, founded in the 1960s. It is a German commercial vehicle manufacturer which is a commercial part of Volkswagen Group. 

Traton is a division of the Volkswagen Group. It was previously known as Volkswagen Truck and Bus AG. Hence, the firm survives as a subsidiary of the parent company Traton.

In 2019, the organization earned sales of €12.85 billion and an operational profit of €361 million. The intent is clear as:

  • To equip clients with revolutionary transportation solutions, 
  • Increasing profitability in the international arena, and, 
  • Expanding the company’s value sustainably.

Considering to switch its diesel fuel vehicles into all-electric powertrains from 2024 onwards.

starting in 2024, and it would transition its fleet away from diesel fuel and all-electric powertrains. 

At present, there are a few variants of electrified variants of:

  • trucks,
  • vans, and
  • buses

provided by MAN under Volkswagen.

Still, under Volkswagen’s push, the company will focus more on commercial electric vehicles. 

SCANIA

SCANIA is a leading global producer of :

  • heavy-duty trucks,
  • coaches,
  • urban and intercity buses, and
  • industrial and marine engines.

Since 2008, the brand has been a major part of the Volkswagen Group.

Scania focuses on delivering efficient and low-carbon solutions. It helps in :

  • increasing customer profitability,
  • improving own competitiveness, and
  • future success.

Scania’s sales revenue in 2020 neared around € 12,482 billion.

LAMBORGHINI

Lamborghini has

  • 167 showrooms worldwide,
  • global sales increase for the previous 9 years in a row, with 8,205 vehicles delivered in 2019.

Automobili Lamborghini has built a constant line of fantasy vehicles over the last half-century, including the :

  • 350 GT,
  • Miura,
  • Espada,
  • Countach,
  • Diablo, and
  • Murciélago and

And, limited editions such as the

  • Reventón,
  • Sesto Elemento,
  • Veneno, and
  • Centenario. 

DUCATI

Ducati, is an Italian motorcycle manufacturer. It was founded in 1926. It has been a member of the Volkswagen Group since 2012. 

Ducati is a group of companies located in Borgo Panigale, Bologna, Italy. It is best known for manufacturing motorcycles.

The Volkswagen Group controls the group through its Italian subsidiary Lamborghini. And it is owned by the German automaker Audi.

The company’s reputation is built on its renowned racing accomplishments. It manufactures high-end bikes in Bologna. 

VOLKSWAGEN COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

Recently, in 2020, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles celebrated its 25th anniversary. It is a prominent producer of light commercial vehicles. The company is making significant and long-term improvements. The way products and services are distributed in cities to improve quality of life, particularly in inner-city regions.

PORSCHE

Porsche’s is built on brand values like: 

  • Exclusivity and social acceptance, 
  • Innovation and tradition, 
  • Performance and daily usage, 
  • Design and utility.

Shipped 272 thousand sports vehicles to consumers in 2020.

This figure is 3.1% lower than the previous year.

China remained Porsche’s largest single market, with sales increasing by 2.6% to 89 thousand units.

The unit sales in 2020 totalled 265 thousand automobiles.

It was down by 4.2% from the previous year.

The 718 and Taycan both grew in popularity.

Porsche manufactured 263 thousand automobiles in 2020.

This is 4.1% lower than in the previous fiscal year.
